One of my favorite quotes of all time is “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” I think it’s important to set goals but it’s even more important to establish steps on how to achieve those goals. Some people don’t even bother with setting goals where others go their whole lives just wishing. “I wish I didn’t have so many bills.” “I wish I wasn’t fat.” “I wish I didn’t have to work here.” Here are some of my tips to goal setting:
Write it down
There is just something more concrete about writing down your goals. To have the steps written out in front of you will also act as your guide. Some people say that it’s too much work to write. My thing is, if you don’t have the time to write what makes you feel like you have time to achieve any of your goals? Give it a try, grab a piece of paper and just write down everything that you want. It doesn’t matter what it is whether it’s materialistic, something you want to improve with your body, or if it’s a place you want to visit like go to the beach, whatever it is just start writing things down that comes to mind.
Plan It Out
Organize your goals by categorizing them into short term (1 year), medium term(5-7 years), and long term(7+years). If you had planned out goals 7 years ago could you have accomplished them by now? Probably most if not all right? After you get a good idea of how long you have to reach your goals set a plan for each one. Set yourself up for success!
Talk About It
If you can find a mentor. Mention your goal(s) to people that have accomplished these themselves and listen to them when they volunteer advice. Be careful not to talk about it endlessly of course you need to practice what you preach. If you can surround yourself with encouraging friends and family it will tremendously.
Don’t Be Afraid to Revise
Goals change. Sometimes some goals are easier to achieve more than others. Some goals take longer to accomplish. Just don’t give up. Make changes if you have to but don’t quit.
